Unit 24 Assignment 1 - Podcast

LINK TO PODCAST: https://soundcloud.com/user674839343/writing-podcast/s-NUSex

This podcast is all about screen writing and how you become a writer. I'll be answering a lot of questions that will probably help you out.

1. How do you become a writer & what is it like to work as one

You can take classes to learn the 'craft' but really to get better at writing you just write. A quote from 'Stephen Davis who is a freelance screenwriter: The cliche is true: The more you write the better you get" You need to learn to accept criticism. Working as a writer is very temperamental a lot of people get side jobs like waitressing for example, to be able to support themselves. It will help you out a lot in writing if you know a lot of people. Agents, Producters etc etc. Writing is super hard to get into, you often need entry level jobs, for example a staff writer,

2. What is a staff writer?

  • Staff writer: Break down scrips, develop plot points, flesh out characters. Working with other writers, bouncing ideas off each other. May participate in first reads and rehearsals with the cast  to take notes and make necessary changes to scenes that aren't playing well. Staff writer does not write the episodes but they have some input into the final shooting script. This is valuable experience for them.

3. What is the commissioning process? How do you get an idea commissioned

To get commissioned you need to get hired by a producer or a production company. You would still usually need to be represented by an agent to be taken seriously. When you send your script in a script reader will read the first ten pages. They will then either decide whether to throw your script away or go onto the next stage where someone will read your screenplay through. All of it. Not just the first ten pages. If they get all the way through then you will be invited to a script development meeting where they talk about the development of your script. Then they will enter the stage of the rewrites. They will work on your script and say things like "I think there needs to be more guns" or something along those lines. Basically just changing your script so that it'll slot nicely into the TV programmes that are currently changing.

How BBC do it: The have a submission link on their website where members of the public and credited writers can submit their scripts. They will look at your idea by genre first, then they may ask you to develop your idea further. When it's ready they'll take it to the channel controller. The dialogue of the show will grow and change. It will also be managed by the channel and genre commissioning editor.

ITV you email them your idea, but they only take it from production companies. Not the general public. Then they go through the same process as the BBC

4. Why do you need an agent, names of scriptwriter agents.

You need your agent to help you with the contract. They will help you negotiate your contract and get you a better deal than your last quote. They want to help you to make sure you're not getting screwed over. Agent names: Laya Gelff Agency, Stuart M. Miller, Susan Smith Company.

5.  How DOES A SCRIPT GET CHOSEN.

When a script gets chosen there is period of time that always happens before it can be made. It's called the "option period" during this time something called the "option agreement" is wrote up giving the rights to said script to the production company that bought it. Then you will be made a purchase price on your script in the form of a contract. Never negotiate the script on your own terms. Always get an agent to do it.  This is why you need a reputable agent. If the project gets green lighted then you get the money and the film starts being made. If not all the rights revert back to you and no one lost any money. You can then chose to option your script to another producer if you'd like.

6.   How does a script writer get payed

A script writer gets payed weekly but you get contracted for a certain number of episodes. There is a Writers guild association that establishes minimum payments that a writer must be payed. The more work a writer is guaranteed the less the studio pays. When a salaried writer writes an actual script, they also get payed for that script on top of the already there weekly minimum pay from the WGA

7.  What legal issues do you have to worry about as a writer.

The words plagiarism is taking someone else's work or words and claiming it as your own. Libel (Lie-Bull) is making false accusations about someone that is damaging to their reputation.

Writers have to be aware of copyright. If you don't copyright your idea then other people could just say that they came up with it with no legal issues. If someone is making an adaptation of something (Like they're making a book into a film) not only will you need to get the rights from the author or publisher of said book, but if the book was wrote 2nd August 1989 Moral rights will apply to the author too. You would have to make sure that they have waved these moral rights.

8. Here are some examples of court cases

Two women are suing the writers of new girl for stealing the show idea from their television script. The lawsuit claims independent producer, Holly Harter, reviewed the script and advised the writers it would work better as a film. The women allegedly shopped around a rewrite in 2006.  They even said that they suggested Zoey Dechenel for the lead role but the producer didn't know who she was. Then apparently the script made a breakthrough with WWE and then their attitudes change towards them and they had trouble getting their phone calls returned. They claim this is when their stolen script started development.

Much calmer and nicer court case apparently the idea for the film terminator was stolen from a famed writer called Ellison. Ellison said it borrowed heavily from his script "Soldier" He eventually received a settlement and an acknowledgement in the movie.

In my opinion there are a lot of high and low points of being a writer.

The high points of working as a writer is being able to see your idea on the screen and having that exciting process from script to scene. You get to be super creative and think out side of the box. You get to do what you love for a living. You get paid highly if you make it. But on the other side you do have to face a lot of rejection and people changing your script so that it's barely recognisable anymore.

Once the word 'music' has been spelt out using album covers, the logo is complete as 'ITV' sweeps on screen above the word music. A voice over is heard throughout explaining what's on next.

Unit 32 Assignment 2 - Sketches/Designs/Collages

Documentary ident idea: Uses post-production to create a fast paced ident. The ident starts out with 'The Ride' logo sweeping on screen then a voice over that announces what's up next (The Ride) and then talks during the ident explaining a bit about 'The Ride' being sure to mention the stars that are on it. Throughout the ident there are flashes different episodes of 'The Ride' the pace is quite fast and then at the end of it the logo 'ITV Music' flashes up suddenly, the ident ends and the episode begins.

Reality TV ident idea: The ident starts out with a shot of some people arguing, then all of sudden doors burst open and we see a camera crew run into the room, the people arguing stop and glare angrily at the camera, then attack the camera, pushing it to the side and the shot is all blurry and spinny and then the logo comes on and says ITV music. Throughout the ident there is a voice over talking about the shows that are going to be on next, the osbournes and stuff

Old music countdown ident idea: The ident starts out of a birds eye view of an empty field. There is maybe the countdown music in the background, that during the time of the countdown music, a bunch of old albums appear one by one on the ground spelling out the word music. Then using post-production the 'ITV' will appear above or next to the word music on the ground. There would be a voiceover saying what's going to happen either at the end of the ident or during it.

Unit 32 Assignment 2 - Mind map

ITV 4 Music targets 16-24 year olds:

Things that 16-24 year olds like to spend their time doing:
  • Socialising
  • Going on the internet
  • Watching TV (reality TV shows, wasting their time etc)
  • Drinking
  • Loud music
  • Shopping
  • Gaming
========================================================================

Analysis of other music channels:

Viva's ident's don't really make that much sense. The design is pretty simple and it does have the logo in the middle of the screen but it doesn't say anything about music. There are usually shot in a dancing crowd but near the middle of the advert some subtitle pops up saying something random. It's not easily understandable and if you've never heard of Viva then you probably wouldn't be able to guess what this channel would be showcasing. I do like the shortness of it though and it's in slow motion some of it.

4Musics ident's are quite neony which is alright but it's kind of weird the style of dance that some of the idents are doing. It sometimes doesn't fit with the music, the style of dance that they're doing fits with a certain type of music. So people might get the wrong idea and think that 4Music will play a certain style of music when they don't. The flow of the ident is good, the way they dance on and then off screen.

Target audience:

4Music target audience: 16- to 34-year-olds (Source: X)

Viva target audience: 16-plus teens and young adults (Source: X)

ITV target audience: 16-34 year olds (I got this from the ITV website but I think that because of some of the programmes they show (Soaps for example) it would be around 60 year olds too.

ITV Brand identity: ITV are modern and unifying. "ITV needed the new identity to transform perceptions of what had been ITV Productions, and establish the brand as a high-quality global studio – indeed, as the world’s leading creator and distributor of multi-platform entertainment."(Source X)

-----

Ident music countdown mindmap:

  • Ticking back time to the 40/50/60's
  • Filmed outside maybe in a quiet field with a lot of space. Quite a generic background
  • ITV logo might pop up in the sky
  • Bright colours
  • Old album collection
  • People dancing different dances  maybe

Ident documentary series mindmap:

  • Quite dark/Metallic look
  • Features 'The ride' logo
  • Dark ITV logo
  • Shows scenes of an interviewer
  • Mainly uses post production
  • Shows the behind the scenes of things being made
  • Fast paced

Ident reality TV series mindmap:

  • People reacting to the reality TV shows flashing back to clips of the actual reality TV shows
  • Lever to switch it from music to TV?
  • ITV logo quite bright and fast to get people interested
  • The Osbournes feature
  • Behind the scenes of the reality TV stuff being filmed
  • Flashes to exciting parts of the TV shows

#1. Music countdown would be filmed like TCM, mainly using real life. (Cameras, Tripod, Real life props) But also using a bit of post production to put the ITV logo in.

#2. The documentary ident would be quite slow paced using mainly already shot footage. Post production would play a big part in this ident.

#3. The reality TV ident would mainly use post production to put in flashes of the reality TV programmes that will be on there. Like to give people little exciting snippets of the show. There might be some actual filming (camera tripod cast)

Unit 32 Assignment 2 - Production Diary

I started doing my mind map thinking about what kind of things 16-25 year olds like to do so I could get a bit of an idea of how to target them in my ident.

I have a rough idea in my head about how I could do the ident that will introduce the 'best of' music video countdowns. Using old albums from the 80's/70's and 60's that I have at home to to form the letter 4 and then use post production to make the ITV curved font letter appear before the number 4.

Looked at 4Music and VIVA, Viva didn't make much sense and 4Music was a bit missleading. The colours of 4Music are quite neon-y and the colours of Viva are quite dark with bits of bright colour

Finished writing about the target audience for everything.

Did rough ideas for the 3 idents using mindmaps. Quite fast paced action on screen for all of them.

Started my actual ideas for the 3 idents. Did an in-depth explanation as to what the idents would include, did collages of each of the idents with explanations underneath.

Finished the three storyboards for my idents used an online storyboard maker.

Decided I'm going to make the filmed argument reality TV ident because filming is a strength of mine. The ident is gonna be quite fast paced

Had a bit of trouble finding cast to do it and ended up finding some people last minute having to film inside college instead of in a house which is where I originally wanted to do it.

Finished filming, didn't take long. Did multiple takes so I had plenty of footage of the argument scene.

Filmed an extra bit where someone filmed me looking at my camera and then realising there was an argument then standing up and having the camera switch to my camera like a first person view.

Started the edit. Put everything in order, decided the extra shot bits doesn't look great so I deleted it.

Searched for suspenseful background music to have playing at the start as I run up the stairs. Got more sound effects for the ident.

Searched for a tutorial to find out different ways to animate my logo. Decided to do a glitchy type logo on after effects to kind of show that it's just been 'hit onto the screen' as one of the cast members ended the filmed section by putting their hand on the screen.

The animation was quite easy because I was just following a tutorial along. Didn't have any problems, finished the logo animation in about 20 minutes.

Put the animation into my ident at the end.

Recorded the voiceover "Up next on ITV we've got the osbournes then at 10 we've got Run's house"

Was told I need to make just a few changes to my ident.

Colour corrected the whole ident making it brighter as it was just a little bit dark. Then put a filter on the start and end of the filmed bits where it made it glow.

Then made the logo freeze frame at the end instead of just glitching off screen so people can focus on the logo more

Re-filmed the voice over to include the word 'music' after ITV.

Finished and exported my ident.

Unit 32 Assignment 1 Designing Idents

http://prezi.com/dvq3jiseu1vn/?utm_campaign=share&utm_medium=copy

What is an ident?
  • An Ident is a short video clip that ID's a channel
  • Like a graphic
  • Carries the channels logo
  • Carries the brand identity

Why do we use an ident?

  • To introduce a programme is going to start
  • Help identify a channel
  • Help introduce a genre or season
  • Marketing tool, to keep the audiences intrest
  • More than one ident to keep it interesting

This ident is targeting young girls. It's suitable for this gender because of the music box like music in the background, young girls usually listen to music box type music, it sounds light and floaty and girly. The ident features a young girl which is why it is more targeted towards that specific gender. The colours in this are blue, bright and happy.

This ident is targeting the mystery genre. You can tell this from the voice over specifically talking about mystery programs. The setting is a table and a guy writing on a typewriter. You typically see this in mystery programs.

What is the purpose of an ident?

The purpose of an ident is to persuade, idents are a marketing tool so that you don't change the channel.
To create a sense of brand identity, to keep a sense of consistency. (The same logo, colour, font etc)
To sell programmes, to sell a program coming up, making people carry on watching.
People use idents break up their programmes, they do this because certain shows don't have adverts so the programmes come up quickly. Also people use idents to keep peoples attention before the advert break. To map out the TV schedule, like when they say "This Lunchtime ____ is going to be playing" so you know that around 12/1pm you can look forward to a TV show.

Opportunities for an ident designer:

For the ident designer, creating a good ident for a known channel could get you a good reputation meaning you'd get more people coming to you. More people coming to you means you get more money, also because you're experienced you could offer charge more money for it. You could get hired by a channel meaning you'd be having constant work.

Opportunities for a channel:

For the channel having a good ident could change a lot for you, if you're viewed by the public as a particularly boring channel, they could completely re-brand you and entice more viewers into watching your channel by your exciting ident. As a channel you could get a contract with that ident designer so that they will continue to work for you and make good different idents. This will switch it up all the time so it's not just the same boring ident, people are surprised each time they view your channel cause the ident will change say every month to a different new exciting ident. (But with the same brand and logo.)

Limitations for a designer:

ASFC approach you and say they want you to make an ident for Ashton TV. 15seconds long has to use the ASFC logo has to target 16 to 18 year olds.

Depending on the brief you might have to keep colour, timescale or an audience in mind.

You might not fit the age bracket you're designing for therefor you will have a lack of knowledge and experience of the brand/channel/audience

Software limitations. You might not have the software at home to create the ident.

You will gain a bad reputation if you don't get the ident done on time. People will think that you are inconsistent, they will think you're a failure, they will think you have a poor skill set.

Your idea may not fit the channel brief. If the brief isn't clear, your criticisms may not be direct. (Take it personally?) You may want to work in a really creative way but you can't.

Limitations of Idents:

Sky Thursdays ident

I think that this ident is rubbish because the design is quite boring and doesn't fit with the colour scheme of the 'SKY' channels. (Which are blue) This is literally the only logo that is a different colour and doesn't incorporate any blue in it whatsoever. This might throw people off. There is no explanation of what sky thursdays is. There's no voice over or no thing before or after this. To make it better I would of put a voice over on it to explain what Sky Thursdays is and why people should tune into this particular channel on Thursdays. I might put pictures of recognisable film stills in the background maybe appearing then disappearing so there's a variety.

BBC Two Ident

I think that this ident is quite boring. The voice over doesn't start speaking until the actual logo has completed it's transition and is shown fully on screen, there's no music to make it interesting. I'm sure a lot of people would of turned over before the voice over even started. The voice over guy has quite a monotone voice, not interesting a lot of people. At the time it was shown this was probably quite good for an ident. But now, there are many limitations of it. I would change the fact that there's no music in the background just to make it more interesting. I would have the voice over talk as soon as the ident started so people aren't waiting around. I would also have a better voiceover, a more upbeat one so people aren't bored to death listening to it.

ITV 3 ident

This ident is really boring, the voice over sounds like a news reader and there's not any music to go in the background of the ident. The only movement on screen is the beams of light moving around in the background. The music only kicks in at the end. The logo doesn't do anything interesting all throughout. I would change the music so that it plays throughout I would make the music upbeat so it keeps people interesting. I might make the voice over guy more exciting. There could be more movement on screen so that people just aren't basically staring at a picture for 15 seconds.

BBC FOUR IDENT

The text was the same BBC 4 text throughout. The speed was faced paced using hand transitions. The space was lots of extreme closeups of different things. There was an extreme closeup of a squid.
The ident is used to persuade people, shows a wide range of interesting images. "BBC 4 is an interesting channel" The purpose was also to sell the programmes. The target audience are 35-44 year olds who have an interest in factual programmes.
The most creative parts are the hand transitions pulling images across octopus ecv - shot of lizard. Hand moves with lizard.
The brand identity that BBC 4 are trying to create is that it's an exciting factual program.

BBC 4 birds ident:

The colours were very monochrome, it was black and white and those were the only colours. The only text was the BBC four logo in the middle of the screen, this is good because it keeps the identity of the BBC brand. The speed of it was quite slow, like there weren't any fast transitions (because there weren't really any transitions it all looked like one "camera" shot. (Though It  might of been done in after effects/Cinema4D)) The birds were moving slow but it looked like the camera was following them through the air so it looked kind of fast. Throughout it was one continuous camera shot, it kept usually at a wide shot or a long shot of the birds (00:10-00:14) but it also sometimes went to a mid shot. (00:25-00:29)
To me the most creative part was where it looked like it went underwater then above water. The brand identity is to make BBC 4 seem like an interesting channel that has nature programmes. The people who it's targeted at are 35-44 year olds who have an interest in nature programmes.
The birds are distorted and blurry from (00:19 - 00:25) this keeps people guessing as to what is actually being shown on screen, keeping people interested.
The audio of the thing was calming music, this plays into the whole nature vibe. Usually when we think of nature we think of calming scenes.

BBC bee ident:

The key colours for the bee ident were blue and yellow. The text was 00:02-00:07 the text appeared up with the time, black and white conatating seriousness. The speed of the ident is synced in time with the music for example at 00:02-00:07 when everytime the bell dongs the action on screen changes the music gets faster and the stuff on screen got faster. The space was filled with lots of colour, there was always something interesting going on in each corner of the space.
The fact that there were bees and the sea in this ident is showing that it's sticking with it's brand identity of the channel (BBC4) also nature because they used animals and nature.
The most creative part for me was definitely where the music synced with the action on screen. I think this because it flowed really well and the bell noise made you wonder what was going to happen next (after you realised that the action was being synced with the audio)

Comparison:

I think that the bee ident was the most creative one because it was a lot simpler and clearer than the other two idents. The first ident was too fast and might of put people off in how weird it was, it was also quite abstract, older people who watch the channel might not of been able to keep up with it. The second one was also a bit too abstract, whereas the first one was easily understandable. I liked the way that the music was in sync with the action on screen, I thought that was very creative. The other ones their music was just a background track really. This one was more thought out. The ident that showed the genre off more was still definitely the bee one. This is because of the fact that they used two bees and two seas pictures to phonetically spell out the BBC 4 logo as it appeared in the middle of the screen. You definitely got a nature-y vibe from this ident. Overall the ident was simple, not boring to watch, very easy to understand and kept the brand identity, I definitely preferred it over the others and thought it worked most effectively.

Unit 23 Assignment 1 - Multi camera techniques

1.

2. A multi camera set up or ,multi camera production means 3 or more cameras on set to record a production

3.

4. A single camera production means one camera using to record a production

5.

6. The following web links talk about the pros and cons of working in a multi camera set up

7. In summary of these websites the pros and cons are,

Pros: A multi-camera production saves time in the filming stages also the post-production stages. There would be less continuity because the scene is only being filmed once at multiple different angles where as over and over again using one camera.

Cons: The cons of multi-camera productions are that it costs more than a single camera production. There's limited shots that you could do because you wouldn't want to get one of the cameras in the others shot. The lighting will be hard to do due to the many different angles that need to be lit properly.

8.

This programme uses Multi-Camera techniques. You can see this at (34:00-34:14) where they show wide shot of the football field to get all of the football action on screen, then at (34:15-34:22) they cut to multiple different shots to show the players reaction to someone missing a goal.

This programme uses Multi-Camera techniques. You can see this throughout the clip, for example at 13:47 to 13:52 they switch between two different angles of the same scene. They do this so the audience can get a more ranged view of the scene they are watching and so that they can see the actors reactions.

This programme uses multi-camera techniques. You can see this throughout the video, they use many  different angles. They have to do this because it's a panel show and it would be too hard for them to get everyone talking on screen/everyones reactions to something if they only used one camera. You can see an example of the different angles from 4:14 (They show a shot of the right hand side team) then at 4:18 (They go to a close up of a member on the right hand team)

This programme uses multi-camera techniques. You can see they have two different angles set up because it's an interview style show you need to show the interviewer and the interviewee. 0:20 shows the Interviewer then at 0:29 it cuts to the Interviewee for their response. You need this setup for this kind of show because it'd be weird if you just saw the interviewer throughout the whole show.

9.

I think that out of all of these shows the How I met Your Mother used their Multi-camera setup best. They used the different angles that they had to make the scene as funny as they could, getting all the actors reactions in without having to reshoot made it so that the final product was the best it could be to entertain the audience. I don't think any of these programmes could of been done as a single camera production. How I met your mother could of been but it would of disrupted the flow of the actors making the show not really up to a great standard. Plus there would of been a lot of continuity errors.

Group proposal

Topic/Issue: Parody magazine show*-

Research the target audience: All genders, teenagers and young adults. It would appeal to this target audience because parody shows usually intrigue younger audiences. Especially with the introduction of online shows. Younger people watch youtube so would appeal to them.

Constraints: People might not be very co-operative in doing the challenges. We might not be able to find the presenters. We can overcome this problem by making sure we get all of the rolls ASAP instead of leaving it last minute.

Genre: Comedy/informative programme.

Typical conventions of a comedy programme are :

  • Brightly coloured set.
  • Quite lively hosts.
  • The camera is usually quite free and moves around with the characters, although I think my camera will be stationary as the host is presenting to the audience, either that or they'll turn to one camera and then it cuts to them as they face another camera.
  • Sarcasm when the host is speaking seen as this is a news show.

Guests/Crew needed:

  • Presenter (four)
  • Vision mixers
  • Camera operators
  • Two mics
I would need four sarcastic naturally funny presenter(s)

VT Needed: 4 VT's

Sport VT
Gaming VT
Challenge VT
Music review VT

Step by step outline:

Introducing the show
First segment : Weird gaming news.
Second segment : Weird sport news.
Third segment: Weird music news/review in certain amount of time
Fourth segment: Challenges (Maybe VT)
Ending the show

Tuesday 21 October 2014

Unit 23/4 assignment 2 - Individual proposal 1

Topic/Issue: News show informing of weird news stories. Similar to the popular Phillip DeFranco show on YouTube but focusing on Gaming?(?) (Or a more broad topic) I want to inform people in a fun way. There will be an 'idiot of the week' where we show a VT of someone doing something mind numbingly stupid. We could mix it in with a small review of something big that's been released during the week? (Or a music video review? But not a very good one.)

Set

Producer

Themes

Research the target audience: My idea is taking bits from an online web show. The Phillip DeFranco show. The kinds of people that watch that are ages from about 15+ to any ages after that up till about 50 years old. I know that my idea would be popular with said ages because because the viewing figures are from all of those ages.

Another show that is loosely similar to the show that I want to make is 'Have I Got News for You' This show is loosely similar because it portrays news in a funny way. Making it enjoyable but also informative. I know that my idea would fit who I'm trying to target because the viewing figures for Have I Got News For You, show this. The people who mainly watch Have I Got News For You range from Teenagers to Adults. I want to make a similar show, so this shows that my show would fit those viewing figures and appeal to the people I'm trying to target.

Constraints: The set might be an issue for our production. I don't want to just green screen everything I kind of want to make it like a homey type set. So this would require bringing in like comfy chairs and stuff. We might not have enough room. I'll overcome this by scouring everywhere for things that will fit in the studio and still give off the look that I want.

Genre: The type of programme I'm making is a comedy news programme.

In mine we'll get the host being super sarcastic and giving his real opinions on these news stories or when they are telling these news stories. We'll also have a weirdo of the week where they show someone being stupid or something in public. Then they will make fun of that. We'll get the camera angles to keep switching when they go on to tell a different story, like they'll face a different camera and it will cut to that when they goes to face it.

Guests/Crew needed Make a list of people you will need in the studio (presenter, participants, vision mixer, camera operators, number of microphones) What sort of people would you need to be in the programme?

Guests/Crew needed:

  • Presenter (one or two)
  • Vision mixer
  • Camera operators
  • One mic or two.
I would need one/two sarcastic naturally funny presenter(s)

VT Needed: In the segment 'Weirdo of the week' we could film someone doing something stupid in public and then use that VT in the show.

Outline structure:

  • Introduction "Hello and welcome to _______ my name is _____ and this week ______
  • Jump into the first news story make sarcastic comment talk to the camera maybe rhetorical questions to make fun of the news story.
  • Turn to the next camera talk about another news story maybe show a clip of said news story.
  • Turn to the next camera talk about the last news story, more sarcasm, funny humour etc.
  • Introduce weirdo of the week explain it (As if they explain it every week) then show the VT
  • Maybe do one more news story that's quite big or talk about releases coming out in the next month (Games??) Maybe review something(?)
  • Exit, "This has been _____ with me ______ good bye and see you next week"

Evaluation

We set out to make a music video using dolls. We wanted put a message across that related to the song we used (Beyonce - Pretty hurts). I think that we have achieved our goal, the actions that we used during the song all had a deeper meaning to them and people seemed to understand that when we asked them questions. The use of barbie dolls was great because barbies have always been seen as perfect so it definitely matched the song well and gave the audience something to think about. The best bit from our stop motion was the sound, when the song said "Mama said you're a pretty girl" and "Brush your hair" because the action matched up very well with the song. Also the fact that it was a 'mother' doll brushing a 'daughter' dolls hair had quite a deeper meaning to it as well in that from a young age girls are taught to make themselves pretty by putting on makeup and doing their hair all nice, the lyrics of the song matched this and again, made the audience really think about the meaning behind the video. I really liked the doll house and how the set was put together. I did this in a certain way, for example when the doll was waking up in her room, the only things that really stood out in the room was the mirror and the bed. This is sort of symbolism for how much looking pretty takes over your life.

I think that the weakest parts of my stop motion was probably the fact that when she was going to hug her daughter she was on her knees and her knees didn't move. I think this because it broke the principle of animation. We didn't mean to break the principle of animation, we tried to crop it out but this just didn't make the animation flow properly as it cut too a close up in the middle of a shot, it made it quite pixilated as well. We decided to leave it in because we really liked that part and it was too late to film. A few people mentioned this issue when we were getting our feedback so you could tell that it didn't just go unnoticed. In the future we'd definitely try to frame our shots up better. Our target audience are teenage girls. I think that we targeted this audience well because the soundtrack was a popular song that is mostly favoured by teenage girls. Also the colours that we used throughout were mainly used to target girls. For example pink and pale pinks. Also the fact we used dolls and that it was in a doll house. The message that we were trying to say during the video is a problem that mainly targets teenage girls as well and has done for many years, it's still a massive issue today. The different types of sound that we used were diagetic and non diagetic. I used many sound effects (including covers rustling, hair being brushed, doors creaking) and throughout I had the music playing. I think that the brushing of the hair was the most sucessful sound. I think this because everything syncs up perfectly. Especially the lyrics in the video and the action on screen. On my part a lot of the sound I overlaid them on each other to make it flow and actually be realistic. For example when she was getting out of bed there wasn't just one sound going on, there was the sound of the covers rustling and birds tweeting, also an alarm clock going off.

What were the common answers about the storyline?

The common answers about the storyline is that it was easy to understand and they got the message that we were trying to portray. They said that it was fun to watch and creative.

What were the common answers about the character design?

They said that they understood the relationship between the mother and the daughter. They thought that the characters were very creative in that we used barbie dolls to symbolise perfection.

What were the common answers about the colours/drawings?

The use of pink was mentioned a lot. They said that the use of pink/dolls house/dolls itself continued to add to the whole message and helped them realise the target audience more.

What were the common answers about the set?

They said that it was very impressive how we used the dolls house and it was very modern.

What were the common answers about what could be better?

They said to split up the lyrics over the face more. Someone said that we could of payed more attention to detail in props. Others said it was quite jumpy.

What were the common answers about the target audience?

Everyone agreed that we really got it right. They knew exactly who we were targeting and said that every aspect of the stop motion (sound/set/characters etc) The whole message behind the video also targeted girls. They said it was very well done.

Do you agree with the common answers; explain which parts you agree or disagree with and why.

I do agree with most of the answers. Nearly everyone understood that we were trying to target young girls/teenage girls and nearly every answer we got was positive. Everyone thought that the animation was very well put together and that it was very interesting to watch.  The only thing I don't agree with is the fact that someone said we could of payed more attention to detail. I think that we did pay quite a bit of attention to detail, for example I personally drew a picture and stuck it on the wall of the barbie dolls house because I thought that it looked quite plain. But also on the other hand we didn't actually change the fact that you could see the knees not moving on the barbie doll when she went to brush the younger dolls hair.

Compare your stop motion to something similar, how does yours compare?

I'm comparing our stop motion to this because in this video they use lyrics on pieces of paper to match with the song and that's what we did in our stop motion. Though all throughout this stop motion that's all they did, I thought ours was a little more creative in making a narrative with dolls as well. The use of the lyrics is very similar to ours because this stop motion flowed very well and we tried to do that with ours as well.

Personal statement

To me Media means being able to shape the real world how I want to. It means being able to change any scene into something extraordinary. The reason that I want to study Media is because it allows me to have a creative outlet. It helps all of these thoughts that I have in my head be shown on screen in a creative way. Media is the art of story telling. Doing Media in higher education would enhance my skills by so much  making my work so much better.

The thing that interests me most in Media is editing. Whether it be SFX or just video editing. It's amazing how much you can change someone's view on something just by manipulating the video through even the simplest of edits. You can change a certain shot so much that it doesn't even look like the original anymore. The SFX side of it really interests me because you can create things that aren't even there to begin with. You can lose all sense of reality and go crazy with your imagination.

Unit 33 Assignment 2 - Planning

Our stop motion is going to be a live action music video. It's going to be based in a doll house. We're going to use props. The music video we're going to do is 'Pretty hurts by Beyoncé'

First half:

Lyrics: Mama said, "You're a pretty girl. What's in your head, it doesn't matter
Brush your hair, fix your teeth.
What you wear is all that matters."

Action: The doors open to the doll house as a symbol of introduction. We see Beyoncé waking up in her bed as the songs lyrics start. She gets up and looks in the mirror. There is flashes of her brushing her hair and then brushing her teeth. And then looking in a wardrobe. She looks down sad then walks off screen.

Second Half:

Lyrics: Just another stage, pageant the pain away
This time I'm gonna take the crown
Without falling down, down, down

Action: The scene cuts to her walking down a hand made stage, stopping at the end then cutting to an extreme closeup of her face with a crown being put on her head.

Lyrics: Pretty hurts, we shine the light on whatever's worst
Perfection is a disease of a nation, pretty hurts, pretty hurts

Third half:

Lyrics: Pretty hurts, we shine the light on whatever's worst
We try to fix something but you can't fix what you can't see
It's the soul that needs the surgery

Action: Live action of someones hands with the lyrics appearing letter by letter

Lyrics: Blonder hair, flat chest
TV says, "Bigger is better."
South beach, sugar free
Vogue says, "Thinner is better."

Action: Shutting the wardrobe. It then cuts to the barbie doll sat on the sofa watching parts of the real beyonce video picks up magazine, opens it and reads the words 'thinner is better' then closes the magazine and on the back it says the end.

Edit in the starting background vocal 'uh uh uh'

Target audience:
Young teens to young adults, mainly female because the song features a female vocalist singing about the issue on girls' appearance and the main character in the video is a girl. Real life fans of Beyonce are around this age and the majority are girls so the topic will suit the target audience. Teenagers will be able to feel like they can relate more to the issue if the lyrics are on the screen it makes the message clearer.

The genre of this stop motion is reality this is because it's tackling the real issue of girls and how they can be portrayed/affected by the media.

Design: Because of the target audience we're focusing on more female related colours - pinks and pastels, the set will be in a girls' doll house which is pink and white on the outside. Using colours like this is more likely to catch attention
and attract a female audience which is who we're targeting.

Young teens and older are inspired by Beyonce and because she is such a public figure and in the public eye she's someone they can confide in and it helps when she is one of the celebrities that make girls feel better about themselves.
This article proves that she's the right person to use for this target audience because she's labelled as a role model for young girls .

Similar product:

We took inspiration from the actual Pretty Hurts music video by Beyoncé, we're following the same storyline but also putting our own twist on it. Both ours and the real video focus on the topic of self image and the action on screen is going to follow the lyrics.

We also took inspiration from a Train - Drive by fan made stop motion music video. We used the idea of writing the lyrics on paper and making the words appear one by one as if they were writing themselves. We thought we would use this only for the chorus of the song because they have the most important lyrics in the song.

Stop motion animation assignment 1 more lesson notes

Arcs and Gravity principles.

Minimum of 3 examples.

Principle of animation:

Time.

Timing will apply to any animation that you think is smooth or if it's jerky they haven't followed the principle of time.b

Presistence of vision is a flip book

Overlapping and follow through. Parts of an object don't all move at the same time.

Follow-through : The arm will continue moving following through even after the elbow has stopped

Overlapping action : Arms and feet moving at different speeds.

Acs and poses: Movement does not tend to be in straight lines but follow

-----------

Time: (00:40-00:45) King kong not following the principle of time, very jerky movement. Doesn't look realistic.

Overlapping action: (1:00-1:05) King kong good example of overlapping action where the tail moves
