Unit 6 Assignment 1 prezi notes script

Coming of Age: (X)

Slide 1: The episode I am going to be reviewing is a television show called 'Coming of Age'

Slide 2: This is the episode

Slide 3
: The Audience of 'Coming of Age' would typically be 16+. I think this because there is a a lot of swearing in it and a lot of talk about sex. You can see that this is aimed at that age group because 16+ year olds are usually associated with swearing/sex/drugs/drinking etc.

Gender: I would say that it isn't really aimed at a specific gender. There are lots of different elements in it for boys and girls. The main focus of this episode is relationships and sex. This appeals to teenagers as a whole regardless of Gender. Though there definitely are sections of it aimed at guys. For example the bit at 5:30 could be seen more aimed at men to make them laugh. Because of the fact that it's a guy doing it to a girl instead of the other way around. They would find that funny.

Psychographics: I'd say that the psychographics for this episode are Aspirers. I would say this because a certain storyline in the plot is all about virginity and it's seen as something that you have. They are extremely materialistic over it treating it like an object that is of worth to have and that it's a big deal losing it. They see it as valuable. And younger people are usually very materialistic.

Oppositional reading?: Older people (25+) could see this show as very very offensive. There isn't much censoring in it. A wide range of people could be offend because of the sexual harassment jokes that are being made in it. For example when DK (puppet guy) sticks his puppet up girls skirts. There is constant mentioning of doing inappropriate things to women and some people could find this offensive because of the way that they are being treated in the show.

Slide 4: What is the tone - The tone of this show is definitely risky comedy. I know this because of the many rude inappropriate jokes that are made throughout the show. The use of a school setting and the light coloured walls show me that it's not going to be sad or dark. The facial expressions on the characters aren't always happy and lighthearted but usually this is for the benefit of the audience for a comical reason.

The audience are suppose to have a positive reaction to this episode. For example during the episode we know they are suppose to laugh a lot due to the laughing track in the background. Laughing tracks usually give the audience a helping hand on what they are meant to be feeling.

It makes me feel happy and puts me in a laughy type mood.

Slide 5: The genre of this Television show is Comedy, I know this because of the Generic conventions that you see throughout. You would usually expect to see someone getting hurt to make them laugh. In this show Ollie falls on a nail and then references to his arse are made throughout the show. There is a laughing track or a live studio audience who laughs along with the show so you can definitely see that it is a comedy show. Most comedic shows have canned laughter in them. The use of the board with the word 'virgin' wrote on is funny because of Matt being made to wear it. Having a fool made out of him.

Slide 6: The narrative is a multi strand narrative. It shows the 3 different story lines going on in the show. DK and the principle with the puppet. The Ollie and Jas with the needles. Then Chloe and her Matt with the virginity crisis.

Slide 7: The representation is that all young people care about is sex. You can see this throughout the show. For example one whole story line solely focuses on sex. This is also shown by the many many many sexual jokes made throughout the show. Also in the way that the characters act with each other. 4 of the main actors are in relationships and are constantly making sexual references to each other or to people around them. Then the one main person who isn't in a relationship seems to be obsessed with sex.

Another representation that can be found is that young people are stupid. For example the way that everyone in this show acts. The fact that one of the characters fell onto a board and it got stuck in his arse and he didn't go to the Hospital for ages because he was afraid of needles makes teenagers out to be some sort of idiots who think that they can survive a nail up the bum. Also the Matthew character is definitely made out to be an idiot. He's shown to be what some people think of as a 'typical male' only thinking with his genitals. You can see this quite clearly in the episode in that when they are trying to have conversations he turns it into something sexual.

An appearance stereotype of this is a chav. You can see this by the clothes that DK wears. He is seen wearing a tracksuit and he has a close shave haircut. He acts like how a lot of people would assume a 'chav' acts.

This is all very stereotypical and represents teenagers in a bad way. A lot of people could have an oppositional reading to this.

IMPROVEMENTS

1) The genre of this Television show is Comedy, I know this because of the Generic conventions that you see throughout.

2) The narrative is a multi strand narrative. I know this because it shows the 3 different story lines going on in the show. DK and the principle with the puppet. The Ollie and Jas with the needles. Then Chloe and her Matt with the virginity crisis. It is very easy to tell that it's multi-strand narrative because the stories don't ever collide. Only now and again do the other characters tell each other about the situation, but even then it's only for a brief moment and they don't get involved in each others storyline. They stick to their own.

3) The representation is that all young people care about is sex.

You can see this by the costume that DK wears. He is seen wearing a tracksuit and he has a close shave haircut. He acts like how a lot of people would assume a 'chav' acts.

This is all very stereotypical and represents teenagers in a bad way. A lot of people could have an oppositional reading to this.

These representations don't appeal to me because they are negative representations. But you could say that they do also kind of appeal to me in the type that I want to watch it because it would make me laugh and think about how I am not like that at all. Which would tie in with the whole Comedy genre of the show and it's main target in making you laugh.

4) This product appeals to the audience because of the fact that it's very similar to most of the risky comedy shows out there. It's easy Television to watch and it doesn't really challenge viewers. They don't have to think when watching it.

This is all very stereotypical and represents teenagers in a bad way. A lot of people could have an
oppositional reading to this.

For example (Reviews on Coming of Age):

It's important to let the audience know what genre the show you're watching is because a lot of people don't really like being challenged when they're watching TV. They want to know what they are watching and easily understand the show.

Coforming to generic conventions is good because you're almost guaranteed a successful show with viewings.

Sometimes it's good to challenge the generic conventions because you could create a show that has a really good response and a lot of people like it. But it's risky.

Dan music video analysis

The music video I will be analysing is 'The  Remembrants - I'll be there for you'

The purpose of this music video is mainly to promote the TV show friends. I know this because the whole cast of the friends show is there. Though it could also be to promote the band. I think this because if the friends cast are already quite well known then they could draw attention from friends fans and make The Band known.

The song 'I'll be there for you' is the opening song to the show. Many people have heard it but not a lot of people know that it was that band who sung it. So by putting the friends cast in it, it would help promote the band and help people clock on to the fact that it was them who sung it for that show.

Mode of address

Mode of address

1q) What is the mode of address?
1a) The mode of address for the Friends introduction is upbeat and light hearted. It's comical at times. It aims to make you feel happy.

2q) Prove it (Facial expressions, colours, sounds, camera....)
2a) The music is very upbeat and happy sounding. They are all dancing fast paced and comically in a fountain together with happy expressions on their faces. They're messing about. There isn't an air of seriousness about it at all. Their costumes aren't exactly colourful but the fact that they are getting them wet and not really caring about them shows that they aren't serious. Their hair is wet and it all has a messy/upbeat/happy feel about it. It's all very lighthearted. The title is quite messy + nice. It's not too formal.

3q) How does it make you feel?
3a) This makes me feel happy and excited to watch the episode. It also puts me in a good mood so that I'm not grumpy when watching the episode.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Genre

  • Science fiction film -
The setting of space or some other out of this worldly type planet. The props I would expect to see are, jetpacks, futuristic things (eg: teleporters, sonic screwdriver type stuff) Unknown objects. The sounds I would expect to hear are usually like

Things I don't expect from this space trailer film:

Fast cars/Car chase - (Normal close up of car/speedometer, setting desert, slo-mo dive) Action type films. (Challenged generic conventions of a sci-fi)
Scottish people, like humans
Romance

Did it meet your expectations?:

It did meet most of my expectations there were just a couple out of the ordinary things that I wouldn't expect to see from a space film.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Genre: Genre is the type of production. For example Horror would be a genre.

Mode of address: Mode of address is what the production aims to make you feel or what kind of tone it is. You can find out the mode of address by looking at facial expressions, colours, sounds, camera...

Target audience: The target audience is what a production aims to appeal to. Certain types of people for example sequels of a film would aim to target already existing fans of the first film. Who it's aimed at, the demographic (Age, gender, sexual orientation, place)

Oppositional reading: Oppositional reading is when someone has a different reaction to what the production piece was suppose to make them have. For example someone thinks something is outrages when it was suppose to be funny.

Preferred reading: Preferred reading is when someone has the reaction that you were suppose to have to a certain production. Finding something funny that was suppose to be funny.

Generic conventions: What you expect to see in a certain genre type of film. For example you expect to see knives and blood in a Horror film.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Defining audiences -

Age: 14+
Gender: Male
Psychographics: Mainstreamers and Explorers. Mainstreamers because it's generic and Explorers because of the Sci-Fi elements.
Why do you know: Because of the fast cars and explosion and spaceships. Due to gender stereotypes the explosions and everything else this is usually seen that guys will like it. It speaks to their stereotypical interests of men.

Other people it targets:

Fans of Star Treks: "Live long and prosper" Sound + midshot of Spock.

Sci-Fi fans - Settings of space, creatures.

Women: Female characters who seem strong and independence. Chris Pine guy is attractive.

Who might have an oppositional reading: Old star trek fans. Different generation, too modern, different directors.

Things you need to find out: Is your media product single or multi stranded.

Flashbacks break the line of the narrative. It takes the narrative out of order.

Why do we use representations and stereotypes? Because it's easy for the audience to understand them. They package reality for you. You learn more about people via the media.

Stereotypes are easily spotted characteristics of a group or a place. It becomes a branding for a group or a place.

Geek stereotype: Big glasses, bowtie, black pants, smart shoes, likes maths, science. Gets bullied a lot.

Women stereotype: Good at cooking, cleans the house, dainty, likes pink. Long hair, makeup,

Lads stereotype: Big group of guys around aged 16-19 loud, wears tracksuits, drinks a lot, mainly beer, arrogant, rude. Likes football.

In my media product I need to give an example if it's positive or negative is it stereotypical. You have to say how it makes the audience feel. Pull out costume or dialogue in my media product that explain representation. It depends on who it is that is watching it.

Activity on representation

What is being represented?: Old people

How? (Positive/Negative/Stereotype): Negative stereotype. Saying that old people are quite dumb and not with it. They have white hair and the old lady has a walking stick. It's insinuating that because they are old they have problems with their sight. They are shown to be that they don't like to be with people because of the fact that they are moaning about the noise. They can't walk around for long periods of time. The highlight of their day seemed to be a cheese sandwich. Their costume was dull, beige, plain. It's a stereotypical old person costume.

What reaction the audience would have?:  Happy makes them laugh at themselves. This is the preferred reading. The oppositional reading could be that old people are offended.

Music video purpose

We*Pan's People - Dancers on shows such as 'Top of the Pops'
*First music video - Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody

The purpose of Music videos are:

  • To promote the artist
  • To created a positive audience reaction
  • Creates a buzz
  • Sell more records
  • To reach a new fanbase

Deconstructing music videos

Style:
In concert/live

Things you expect to see:
- Gigfootage, shots from stage, audience shots, wide crowd shots, backstage footage.

Style: Animation

Things you expect to see:
Animated characters
Visualise abstract ideas

Style: Narrarive

Things you expect to see:
Like a film
Uses cinematic shots
Draws out emotional response
Got fictional characters in it
It's got lyric interpretation
Consolidates the songs meaning (Brings multiple things together)

Style: Surrealist - Unreal, bizarre, dream-like

Things you expect to see:
Abstract mise en scene
Lyric interpretation
Challenging "normal" expectations

Taking inspiration:

Pastiche - Borrowing techniques or styles from previous work

Homage - respectful references of a previous work

Parody - A humours imitation of a previous work

Question:

What has this video borrowed it's techniques and styles from?

1) 70's Music shows/Westerny type things/Hillbilly etc

Why is it not an Homage?

1) Because it's generalising music shows. If it was an Homage it would be specifically mentioning TV shows.

Why is it a parody?

1) Because it's taking the piss out of Alicia Keys - New York

Why is it not an Homage

1)  Because it's quite clearly taking  the piss out of the video.

Reflective analysation

Our group were very efficient with the paperwork. We managed to get basically all of it done in the first week before we started filming. This benefited us later on in the work because we didn't have to dwell on it like we would have done if we didn't do it. A lot of things could of been improved, for example the fact that we worked in a group of our friends.

Group presentation:

Group script:

Intro - Vicky
Welcome to our presentation, our

group is me, Jess, Jade, Maddi and Matt.
When we were creating this
documentary we gave each other different roles to make it fair and so we were
all doing something. I'm doing the risk assessment
Jess is doing the script
Jade is doing the shooting schedule

and our contingency plan Matt is doing the location recce and

Maddi is doing the story board.

What’s it about? - Maddi
Our documentary idea is based on

different cultures in Manchester and how different people living here adds to
ours and we’ll talk to different people to see if they think it's a
multicultural place. We also are aiming to talk to different types of people –
the gay community for example and show how they all come together to create
Manchester’s identity – the start of this news report is similar to what we
want our whole documentary to be like, talk about multi culture with facts but
keep it interesting.

Where will it be filmed? - Matt
We want to appeal to a wide audience and don't want to focus in one place and one type of people so
we’re going to film in a few different places, those being at the Manchester at the Christmas markets, Gay Village, Urbis, around college and China Town because we thought China Town is more relevant to Manchesters culture rather than a Mosque.
We're looking at the Christmas Markets as an example and asking the question
"is this really their culture or is it just something they put on for Christmas to make money?"

What’s the style? - Jade We want our documentary to be participatory, two of us are presenting it and we want it to be informal to some extent because our target audience are teenagers as well as middle aged
people so we want them to be able to watch and understand it and hopefully
learn about how diverse Manchester is and the variety of people that we have
living here.

Who’s in it? - Jess

Matt and Maddi are being presenters throughout and we also want to speak to people who run stalls on the Christmas markets, if not anyone who has been to them and ask if they feel like they make

Manchester more multicultural. Also if we can find anyone that have chosen to
visit the city and ask why they did, we want the people that we speak to, to be
around the ages we want our target audience to be so that they can relate to
it.

Documentary Assignment 1 NOTES

Research Techniques

Types of research

Qualitative - Peoples opinions. Opinions that have come from somebody. EG a film review. Discussion, reaction to a television programme

Quantitative - Numbers and data numerical results. EG Audience breakdowns. Box office sales. DVD sales. Audience viewing figures.

Advantages of qualitative data -

Results can guide a project to success, meaning if someone gives you feedback you can go off and make a better essay. Like a review

Can inform future research

Rich source of information - lots of detail you can have. Reading language etc quite bespoke. Etcetera

Disadvantages of qualitative data -

Can be tricky to get actual results. - very general. Not really exact.

Findings are a result of lots of variables - think Psychology, participant variables (Guy reviewing love story just broke up with GF might be a bit naff about it)

Has the impression of being less valid - Got different opinions. Not as black and white as quantitive stuff.

Advantages of quantitative -

Easy to analyse (clear results from graph charts etc)

Facts can be used in your favour. - 55% of people enjoyed my film. Only 45% thought it was shit. Can change facts around/manipulate the facts.

Disadvantages of quantitive -

Results are without detail. Binary usually.

Doesn't inform you for future research. Usually end product of something.

Audience research - research into the audience of a film.eg focus group into rough cut of film

Marker research - research into competition. Other people who have made documentaries. Eh how many DVDs did the other one sell

Production research - research into setting up of production. Might be production costs. Like a quantitive bit of data might be 'How much is it gonna cost to buy this camera'

Primary research undertaken. By yourself or your group first hand, eg questionnaire, interviews, surveys, focus groups, participating in internets forum.

Secondary research - Previous research undertaken by others that you can use to inform your one research. Taking shit from wikipedia. Books, text books, internet. Documentaries. Searching Internet forums.

Data gathering agencies - certain agencies are set up to gather and publicise information.

BARB - Broadcast audience ratings board. TV ratings.
