Unit 22 Assignment 1 - Tuesday Notes

What is single camera production?: A production that uses only one camera
Multi camera production: A camera with multi cameras

Single camera productions

  • A single camera production is not expensive because you don't have to hire as much staff
  • The performance of the actors will be great because it helps the creative process because you know when it's your time to act.
  • The locations aren't designed to have multiple cameras on them which is why single camera productions are mainly done on location.
  • Because it's a single camera production there doesn't need to be many crew people

Formats of Single camera productions

  • Serial drama - Something that runs for 3 or 4 nights and that's it (Black Mirror)
  • Series - Something that happens continuously (Breaking bad)
  • One-Off (Film) - Most films are single camera productions. Documentaries as well

Narrative Structure

  • Sequential/Linear - Starts at the beginning and ends at the end. Everything is in chronological order
  • Non-Linear - Doesn't run from beginning to end (Starts like in the middle or something)
  • Flashback - Exposition (Backstory)
  • Realist - Narrative might be based in the real world
  • Anti-Real - World that isn't real
  • Ending - Open/Closed - You can have two different endings: Closed, include some kind of resolution. Open, one that would leave it on a cliff hanger

Technical

  • How do they tell the story?
  • We learn without being told overtly.
  • We're not given information in easy and obvious chunks, why?

Voice over link - Unit 30 Assignment A2/A3

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhB-V_eK7-4&feature=youtu.be

What we tried to accomplish: During our time producing the advert we aimed to inform people of 4G and make it sound interesting which would persuade  customers to buy the product. We also aimed to make our advert entertaining to keep the viewers watching.

Use feedback from others to identify specific strengths/weaknesses: In our focus group when asked "What do you think of the advert" 3 people said that they thought it was creative. This is good because when making an advert you'd want it to be something people haven't seen before. When asked "what do you think of the sound" someone said the voiceover (mise-en-scene) could of been a bit better.

Compare your advert to similar existing adverts to identify strengths and weaknesses: Comparing it to the RIAS advert, theirs is quite quick and straight to the point. Ours could of been a bit shorter. (REST OF THIS QUESTION IS TALKED ABOUT AT END OF VOICEOVER)

Evaluation of my role:

My role was the Director. I think that I handled this role very well. For example, choosing what props we should use, I made realistic choices for our budget and they fitted well into the advert. When organising people I made sure not to be the boss I got everyones opinions on what they thought looked good and if they had any ideas to let me know. Other people in my group (Jess Pitman) said that she thought I was a very well organised Director and I didn't just take charge, though if there were times when we were messing about I got us all to focus and do the
work.

Voice over notes - Unit 30 A2/A3

EE-4G Advert Voiceover

first coming up with the idea
The titanic scene is comical so thought that would engage people more
Ballon scene
Farm animals would be cute and engaging too
Poster in the background advertsing 4G
Joe having exaggerated facial expressions to make it obvious what he liked and dislike

VOICE OVER
  • Sun going in at times having to pause the camera and wait. Very time consuming.

  • People said they thought that the advert was very creative and different. (Pause at green screen bit) for example people said they enjoyed the Green screen because it was funny.

  • Pause at 00:19

  • This bit showcased our technical skills in making the green screen look authentic. As you can see there is no green left in the video and the picture blends well into the background. Nothing is distorted and it has been edited very well.

  • In the focus group people said they didn't understand why he was stood in front of a fountain. We thought it would be a hard joke to get but we left it in because we thought it fit with the whole comedy element and would be an interesting change of scenery

  • They said that they could tell it was for an EE advert because it was very creative and that's what we tried to portray. For example in this bit it's quite different in how other people would show the thingy (show the post bit)

  • The editing was hard because of the fact that there were so many long continuous shots if we got something wrong it was very hard to go and reshoot it. There is a bit, here (show bit) where we cut a bit of the clip but made it look like we hadn't so it ran smooth. We cut it because he shook his head to a question where he was suppose to be nodding. (00:50-00:54)

  • The mise-en-scene for this advert is good because we made it look like he was in a train station by the voice over asking him why he was going to town and the generic scene of a bench infront of a brick wall.

  • Another major challenge was the wind when filming the celebration scene

  • Technical skills (show the celebration scene and talk about how it was to get the balloons to come over the camera without the shadow of the balloons and the fact that we had to get so many things right in one long shot. The cinematography was very good it didn't look sloppy)

  • CONCLUSION: In conclusion I think we managed time very well, for example we filmed everything we needed to all in one day and then we had the rest of the week to edit it to make it perfect. Everyone in the group did what they needed to do and was able to hand it in on time. Comparing it to another advert, for example the RIAS insurance advert hasn't done very well on capturing your attention. We aren't interested form the start by anything, there is no comedy element in it. It doesn't make us want to buy the product. It's very boring all round. There isn't anything to draw you in. Whereas our advert we made it colourful, sunny, happy ukelele music in the background and we used all round fun elements etcc etc.

  • NEW STUFF
  • We tried to make the advert fun and happy to entice people into watching it and also to make the company sound good to persuade the audience to get 4G
  • The sound was hard to get a good balance because the music sometimes would overpower the voiceover and it was hard to try and make it so that the sound getting louder and quieter was subtle and not deafening.
  • People in the focus group said that they liked the sound because it was very upbeat and happy. This is exactly what we tried to portray in the advert because EE as a whole is a very happy based type company.
  • We also did get some footage of different animal and that is because our advert wanted to be different and funny
  • we used a voice over in the advert so we all went in a separate room and record the voice of  Dan so that was good because he used a different tone of voice it only took us a few minutes to record the voice.
  • It took us about a week to film The advert so that was all good. It took us longer because we came up with Some good and crazy ideas to make our advert more exciting and interesting. Aldo it did not take us that  long to Edit as-well as we All did it as a group so that was good because we was All sharing ideas
  • Vicky Was in charge of the camera as she was doing some good shot, Josh was in the advert and was sorting out the equipment for the setting so he was a big help I also helped out with the setting like the green screen the lighting of the green screen and the props as well  Jess was helping with vickie with the camera and the props we used like the ballon, the poster and the part poppers so we all contributed in our advert to make it good.
  • I think we worked in the brief's standard to create out advert, of course we needed to advertise what they were telling us in the brief, which was EE, we had get the point across to the audience that 4G is better and quicker, for example the shot where the character picks different clothing and then buys them straight away, this is a way of advertising 4G as it is quick and easy to buy products online, we also made the advert set in a happy tone and environment, to make the advert catchy and stand out to the audience, using catchy background music.
  • When in the process of making our EE advert we all had equal roles to participate; Vicky did the camera work and editing as did i and Josh and Bilal did the sound. We all helped out on the pre-production documents. As a group we were very organised we planned out the filming dates to film and booked equipment whilst working on the pre production documents so after we finished that we could go out and film straight away. The way we worked was successful and easy for us to get organised. There wasn't many things at all that effected our time management really. We obviously had to work around Joe's time table as he was filming as well as having other lessons to attend to so we had to figure out the days where he was free to film with us which wasn't a problem as he was pretty much free most of the time, other than that our time management was organised. We had no problem with communication as we created a group chat inbox to talk to each other about pre production work and also filming dates.

Vicky's point:

Explain more strengths and weaknesses of the advert in it's editing, camera, sound etc though referring more to your focus groups.--------
